Facts

Domestic violence is a pattern of abuse committed by a spouse or other intimate partner such as a boyfriend or girlfriend. Domestic violence does not discriminate; many victims vary in age, religion, race, and economic situations.

Top 5 Signs

If you suspect someone you know is being abused, look for signs such as:

  • Frequent bruises, injuries and stories of "accidents" or "clumsiness"
  • Submissive behavior and low self-esteem
  • Fearfulness of partner
  • Isolation from family and friends
  • Excessive fear

There are a number of resources for you to report domestic abuse and remember, it is confidential should you also fear becoming involved.

Consider this...

  • 50% of abusive husbands also abuse their children.
  • 1 in 5 female teens are physically, emotionally and sexually abused by a partner.
  • Over 3 victims on average are murdered every day by an abusive partner.

You may be in a physically or emotionally abusive relationship if any of the following controlling behaviors occur between you and your intimate partner. These are only a few signs of abuse.

  • Uses physical force against you such as slapping, hitting, kicking, pushing, or choking.
  • Humiliates, threatens, intimidates, or criticizes you.
  • Isolates or limits your interaction with your family and friends.
  • Terrorizes you or threatens to hurt your children or other members in your family.
  • Acts possessive, controlling and distrustful of you.
  • Throws or destroys objects in your presence when angry.
