Domestic violence is a pattern of abuse committed by a spouse or other intimate partner such as a boyfriend or girlfriend. Domestic violence does not discriminate; many victims vary in age, religion, race, and economic situations.
Top 5 Signs
If you suspect someone you know is being abused, look for signs such as:
- Frequent bruises, injuries and stories of "accidents" or "clumsiness"
- Submissive behavior and low self-esteem
- Fearfulness of partner
- Isolation from family and friends
- Excessive fear

You may be in a physically or emotionally abusive relationship if any of the following controlling behaviors occur between you and your intimate partner. These are only a few signs of abuse.
- Uses physical force against you such as slapping, hitting, kicking, pushing, or choking.
- Humiliates, threatens, intimidates, or criticizes you.
- Isolates or limits your interaction with your family and friends.
- Terrorizes you or threatens to hurt your children or other members in your family.
- Acts possessive, controlling and distrustful of you.
- Throws or destroys objects in your presence when angry.
